Butt Mountain Mud
This area is the Jefferson National Forest near Pembroke, Virginia, United States. It's full of forestry service roads that are pitted with mud holes, and or clay bank areas that when alot of rain has fallen and traffic is heavy, such as during hunting season, get churned up rather well. We had an exception wet fall and early winter that coincided with the hunting season that produced some spectacular results.
These areas are public and pose a challenge to access as you never know when someone might happen by.
Most areas are clay based weather it be red, yellow, or gray. Some areas can swallow a truck others barely your feet.
Always fun to find out which.
The map doesn't have the detail that my maps do, and all the roads and trails are not shown so this is an approximation of location.
Also, this is near Mountain Lake, and Mountain Lake Hotel. For your hopeless movie romantics. If y'all have seen Dirty Dancin' with Patrick Swayze, this is one of the locations where filming was held. The lake has since developed a crack that now drains the water from it. I had been fortunate enough to investigate this massive mudhole while drained during a dry spell and ended up in a standing position over my head with not bottem to be found. Freakin' awesome. No pics of that unfortunatly.
